Information literacy for instructors and researchers in university of Baghdad in information age

Abstract

   The term "Information Literacy" is one of the most modern terms in the world of information. This term has gained greater importance following the advent of the Internet, which is a prerequisite for the effective people in the knowledge and information societies. Universities in Iraq, are the largest institutions that face several challenges force them to change their traditional educational techniques and methods with students to provide them with the necessary scientific skills to improve and develop the community. In this research, a survey through two questionnaires was carried out to collect data regarding information awareness among lecturers and researchers in Baghdad University, and then the data was analyzed by finding the weight percentile and the weighted average. The research found a number of recommendations:

  • The educational institutions, especially universities, have to take an effective role in instilling principles of IT education and awareness, as they are the centers of thoughts and cultures and play a great role in giving a new generation to society.
  • The research emphasizes that Information Literacy is needed in our time, as it is very necessary to transfer the communities to the era of knowledge. The circle of economic knowledge cannot be completed without the Information Literacy, which requires cooperation of all the concerned parties to enrich the awareness in our society and to overcome all the obstacles that prevent the wide use of internet.
